Childhood Emotional Neglect: The Invisible Trauma with Visible Consequences

Updated: May 18, 2024

  • Were your emotional needs met as a child?

  • 18% of the adult population report some sort of Childhood Emotional Neglect (CEN).

What is Childhood Emotional Neglect?

CEN is the silent treatment of the emotional world. It's not about what did happen to a child but rather what didn't happen. It occurs when parents fail to respond to a child's emotional needs. It might sound subtle, but its impact? Anything but....

The Invisible Trauma

When a child's feelings and emotions aren’t validated or attended to, it creates an internal void. That void, being invisible, often goes unrecognized. Unlike physical abuse or neglect, there are no visible scars or bruises.

Visible Consequences

Even though you bury the trauma, on the outside this can show up as :

  • Self-discipline: Adults with CEN have difficulty setting limits

  • Feelings of emptiness: That numbness no matter what you do, you can't explain it

  • Difficulties with self-compassion: Being critical of yourself

  • Relationship Problems: Attracting violent or manipulative partners/friendships

Ways to oversome CEN

1. Establish small daily routines

2. Self-reflection

3. Practice being present

4. Recognise red flags (in yourself and others)
